During Louis XVI’s reign, the Manufacture de Sèvres gradually turned from painted scenes like those by Boucher to abstract motifs, more in line with the neo-classicism then in vogue as illustrated by this elegant “partridge eye” pattern by the renowned painter Niquet (1777). Foliate myrtle-leaf patterns surrounding roses painted “au naturel” stand out against a ground composed of tiny clusters of blue dots centered on a single crimson dot.
