The Courge tea set, was created in 1891 for the Paris Woman’s Arts Exhibition, then shown at the Universal Exhibition in Chicago in 1893 and in Paris in 1900. The squash motif, widely employed in Asian decorative arts, arrived in France with Japanism in the mid-nineteenth century. Christofle has been a pioneer of Japanese style, one of the origins of European Art Nouveau. The Courge tea set, in sterling silver, characterized by a naturalistic style, is a harbinger example of the European Art Nouveau.

The sculptor Leon Mallet, awarded several times for its collaborations with Christofle, created a tea set that elegantly represents the curves or of a squash. The strength of the Master Embosser, the precision and finesse of the Master Chaser as well as the rigor of the Master Polisher are required to create the perfect roundness of this set and to sculpt the smallest details in the metal.
